—the word canon as applied to the scriptures has long had a special and consecrated meaning. In its fullest comprehension it signifies the authoritative list or closed number of the writings composed under divine inspiration, and destined for the well-being of the church, using the latter word in the wide sense of the theocratic society which began with god‘s.
This paper will demonstrate how the book of mormon captures and integrates this important aspect of ancient israelite religion and creates a depiction of the heavenly council of god that fits well with the depiction of the divine council in the hebrew bible.
Some people find support in psalm 82:8 for a “divine council” ruling over the world. According to some “divine council” interpretations of psalm 82, the human judges of israel were never appointed over all the “nations” and so the “elohim” at issue in psalm 82 could not be the human judges of israel.
For the orthodox israelite, yahweh was both sovereign and vice regent—occupying both “slots” as it were at the head of the divine council. The binitarian portrayal of yahweh in the hebrew bible was motivated by this belief. The ancient israelite knew two yahwehs—one invisible, a spirit, the other visible, often in human form.
